The Subconscious Mind
The Part of the Iceberg You Don't See!
The dominant subconscious mind
The human mind is like an iceberg in the sea. The conscious mind is only the tip of the iceberg, that part of the psyche which is visible and understandable because we can inspect it.
The iceberg lying underwater
But there exists a treasure house, a golden mine, a genie within us: our subconscious mind. It makes up an estimated 88% of the total mind while the conscious mind is the remaining 12%. As an analogy, we can say that the dominant mind: the subconscious, is like the area of the iceberg lying underwater.
Conscious versus Subconscious Mind
We do not have two minds but what we call our conscious mind is the reasoning, analytical part. It holds the critical factor which evaluates and selects. Although we have free will to do anything we want and it is in our conscious mind where that will is created, we base our decisions on the strength of our desires. If whatever we think is in accordance to our core beliefs, it sinks down into our subconscious, which then creates according to the nature of our thoughts.
The subconscious accepts only what the conscious mind believes at the time the thought or suggestion is offered. The function of the conscious mind is to evaluate (critical factor), compare each new idea with previously accepted ideas and in this manner determine its veracity before allowing it to enter the subconscious memory bank.
Remember that once the new idea is there, it becomes absolute truth to the individual, who will use it to judge the acceptability of future ideas. If the conscious mind changes an opinion after it has become entrenched in the subconscious, the subconscious will not change with it.
Our Thinking Process
Although our conscious mind may seem to call the shots in our thinking process, it is ruled by the desires and beliefs already programmed into the subconscious, which is the “REAL US”, our personality.
Even with the ability to reason and decide upon the most advantageous course of action, the conscious mind can not implement its decision unless the subconscious agrees and directs its energy toward the end.
We can say that the conscious mind has the WILL and the subconscious mind has the POWER. When both work in harmony, we give ourselves real WILLPOWER.
Getting rid of self-limitations
The subconscious mind is determining our personality and the quality of our lives. To remove discord, confusion, lack, and limitations from our lives, we must remove the cause. That cause is the way we use our subconscious mind, the thoughts and images we encourage in it.
When we think correctly, when we understand the truth about ourselves, when the thoughts deposited in our subconscious mind are constructive, harmonious, and peaceful, the magic working power of our subconscious will respond.
The world within us creates the world out
If we can see ourselves being happy and successful in our mind, we will find it easier to act as though we already are. Our thoughts will determine our actions and the results will follow. Thinking of ourselves as a happy and successful individual, we will act as happy people do, and if we act as they do, we can not help to be happy and successful.
Subconscious desires always outweigh conscious ones
An alcoholic may consciously desire to quit drinking. He regrets seeing his wife’s love turn to disgust and his career go down the drain. Yet he will continue to drink in spite of his conscious desire to quit because the change is not accepted in the subconscious mind.
The two parts of the mind differ, and the subconscious opinion will be the dominant one. It will continue to dictate a desire and subsequent behavior in spite of a conscious opinion.
Our past affects our present and future
Negative, destructive thoughts that the subconscious accepted literally in the past continue to work negatively in the present.
Sooner or later, these accepted thoughts or beliefs will emerge and take shape as an outer experience corresponds to their content. We have to make sure to have the right positive thoughts and beliefs about ourselves, free of self-limitations, and this is how as a hypnotherapist I can help you using hypnosis to recreate new associations and positive changes in your subconscious mind.
